Week 4

My goal for this project was to learn more about the work that goes on behind the scenes in the athletics department and to gain a better understanding of the skills that are necessary to be successful as an athletic director. One of the skills I noticed play a big role this month is organization since so much planning goes into scheduling, games, and events. This week I got to help Kate design the basketball uniforms for next year and listen in on a meeting she had with someone at BSN who helps order the uniforms. Aside from just designing the uniforms, Kate also has to pay attention to how much they will cost and what other gear we can order within our budget. As a player, I of course would love to have new travel sweats and practice jerseys, but did not realize how expensive it is to order these along with 15 jerseys in white and 15 in blue for each of the boys and girls teams. This is just one example of the many decisions that Kate and Tyler are faced with each ...

Week 3

Something fun that I got to do this week was help design the new basketball uniforms for next year. Catlin orders new uniforms every four years and the old ones are passed down to JV. It was interesting to talk to Kate about what new gear we want to prioritize with our budget since it is not plausible to order new uniforms, practice jerseys, travel sweats, and shooting shirts all at once. I helped Kate and Tyler decide on the style of the new uniforms and I realized how many small details there are to pay attention to, such as the font of the lettering. It is exciting to be a part of these decisions that Kate and Tyler have to make every now and then!      This week I also helped with restocking the medkits, making sure that all the materials were there, and getting rid of all the trash. During my senior project, I have really learned that the athletic director's job is not just scheduling and watching over sports events, but there is so much admin wor...

Week 2

This week I did something different every day, a nice representation of the athletic director's duties here at Catlin. I finished the athletics slideshow, ordered t-shirts for basketball senior night, finished checking off the volleyball uniforms with Tyler, did some billing, and listened in on an athletic director's Zoom meeting. Kate also set me up a huge desk and chair to sit at in her office, as you can see in the photo!            One of the most interesting things I got to see this week was the AD meeting with all the schools in our league. They talked about scheduling soccer games for next fall, as well as their stance on masks and spectators for the current basketball season. I found it interesting that Kate was the only woman AD in the meeting, and most of the conversation about basketball was focused on the men's team. All of the AD's agreed that players and spectators will be required to wear masks for the remainder of th...

Week 1

May 17-21 For my senior project, I am working with Kate and Tyler in the athletics department. I chose this project because I love playing and watching sports and I was curious to see the management side of a high school athletics department. Kate is the athletic director and Tyler is the assistant athletic director. The tennis/golf/track season just ended this week and winter sports are starting up for the remainder of the year. I will also be playing on the basketball team throughout the month of senior projects, which is coached by Kate. I started this project by just reaching out to Kate and asking if there was anything I would be able to help her with. She said they can always use help with daily tasks that come up such as organizing team gear and uniforms, as well as more long-term projects like creating the end-of-year athletics slideshow or planning events for the sports teams (like senior night). I enjoy planning and am a very organized person, so I thought I would enjoy helpi...
