Week 1

May 17-21

For my senior project, I am working with Kate and Tyler in the athletics department. I chose this project because I love playing and watching sports and I was curious to see the management side of a high school athletics department. Kate is the athletic director and Tyler is the assistant athletic director. The tennis/golf/track season just ended this week and winter sports are starting up for the remainder of the year. I will also be playing on the basketball team throughout the month of senior projects, which is coached by Kate.

I started this project by just reaching out to Kate and asking if there was anything I would be able to help her with. She said they can always use help with daily tasks that come up such as organizing team gear and uniforms, as well as more long-term projects like creating the end-of-year athletics slideshow or planning events for the sports teams (like senior night). I enjoy planning and am a very organized person, so I thought I would enjoy helping Kate and Tyler out this month.

My first goal for this project is to create the end-of-year slideshow that will highlight each sports team from this year. Another goal is to design and order senior night t-shirts for the basketball teams, which I will hopefully order at the beginning of next week. A more broad goal I have is to generally gain a better understanding of all the work that goes on behind the scenes of Catlin athletics. It has been interesting to see how busy Kate and Tyler are during the day, receiving so many emails and phone calls.

This week I spent three days at OES helping run the tennis district tournament. This consisted of recording match scores, providing balls to the players, and updating brackets, as well as rolling the outdoor courts after the rain stopped. There were a lot of coaches and other athletic directors at OES for this tournament, so it was fun to see Kate and Tyler interact with them and talk about league meetings and planning for the upcoming sports season, such as rules about wearing masks. On Friday, I came to Catlin and began working on the end-of-year slideshow, which I will continue doing for the next couple of weeks.

  1. Sounds like some great variety in your days, Mara! I love that you've found a project that allows you to learn a ton while being super helpful with Kate and Tyler (I agree that you're an extremely organized person). You're getting to experience a very unique spring season for the athletics department, too!

    1. Yes, interesting season for sure! I've gotten to hear a lot of discussion between Kate and Tyler dealing with scheduling right now since the seasons are so short and not in the same order as they usually are.
