One of the most interesting things I got to see this week was the AD meeting with all the schools in our league. They talked about scheduling soccer games for next fall, as well as their stance on masks and spectators for the current basketball season. I found it interesting that Kate was the only woman AD in the meeting, and most of the conversation about basketball was focused on the men's team. All of the AD's agreed that players and spectators will be required to wear masks for the remainder of the season, and I am very excited that Catlin will now be allowing home fans!
In terms of my goals from last week, I did finish the slideshow and order the t-shirts. Additionally, I learned a lot more about what goes on behind the scenes this week. I helped Tyler with putting away all the volleyball uniforms and making sure all players returned their gear. Each item has a letter written on the tag that is recorded at the beginning of the season for each player, creating an easy system to keep track of the gear when it is returned. I also learned a bit about billing for uniforms and track events. I did not realize how big of a cost comes with running a track meet (running the clock, start gun, etc.), so I learned that when Catlin hosts a track meet, we must bill all the attending schools to split those costs. Kate also has to keep track of all the costs that go towards running the game clock for each sport and which players order uniforms or other team gear.
Lastly, when Kate and Tyler were away from their office, I cleaned out a drawer they had in their office because I couldn't let Kate keep digging through it every time she needed something! Enjoy the before and after pictures below.
You're the coolest, Mara. I'm sure they are so so happy to have you there. Your observations about the AD conversation are interesting. I wonder if there is always more focus on the boys' games or if it just happened during this particular conversation. I have only worked in 3 schools and all have had women for the AD, so I am just learning that maybe my experience is unique. Thanks for sharing your observations and giving us this peek behind the scenes.
ReplyDeleteThat's super interesting Traci! I have only been to one school besides Catlin (and they didn't have sports) so I don't have any other experiences to compare it to.
DeleteMara: I echo Traci's sentiments. You are amazing. Are you available to work this summer because my garage could use your help! (Kidding - sort of LOL!) That's so excellent that you're learning so much and seem to be genuinely enjoying the experience. Kate and Tyler are amazing people and it sounds like the athletic office is to the place to be this month! Looking forward to following along with your senior project blog.
ReplyDeleteMara your organizational skills have helped us out so much in athletics. More importantly I too find it interesting about the male to female ratio in sports that exists on the coaching/admin side at all levels.
